Eden Galvan was passing by the Texas Wesleyan University campus with a friend in September 2021 when the two happened upon 4Saints Food Pantry.
It was a transformative day for Eden and for the pantry.
Eden and her husband, a construction worker, struggle to make ends meet. Their family includes four nephews and nieces.
Eden was grateful to take groceries home to her family that first Friday. She came back for assistance in October 2021 and a few times after that. During one of those visits, a regular volunteer – a man Eden describes as “a heart with two legs” – asked Eden if she could help translate for a client who spoke only Spanish. In that moment, Eden heard God speak to her.
“God told me to volunteer. I’m so grateful with God that I know I need to help somebody else,” said Eden. “This is one opportunity to say, ‘Thank you, God.’”
Many of the clients served by 4Saints Food Pantry have language barriers. Without Eden’s help, they would have difficulty completing registration paperwork (to verify income eligibility) or understanding the pantry’s food distribution process.
On some Fridays, Eden brings homemade tamales or other treats to the pantry to share with her fellow volunteers. On some Fridays, Eden herself takes home groceries to her family. On every Friday, Eden feels God’s power at work.
“This is a special place,” said Eden. “I feel so loved here.”
